Situated between La Goulette, the port of Tunis and Carthage, it opens onto the Gulf of Tunis to the east and Lake of Tunis to the west. As of 2004 it had a population of 58,152.[1] Before 2001, Le Kram was a municipal district within the municipality bordering La Goulette.

Aga El Kram is the original name of the city that is in Frenchified "Le Kram". Professor Mohamed El Aziz Ben Achour speaks well of the founder of the city:

"Mustapha Aga [...] living peacefully in his palace in the area of Carthage, in the midst of an extensive orchard with fig trees are the source of the name of the village which was established later in this location... "

These gardens were originally the name of the city because kram means in Arabic a fig or a fruit tree in general. Ahmed Bey, who is I had attributed this field in its War Minister Agha. Kram has been home to many Europeans under the French protectorate. They then were building houses along the beach. Modest or sumptuous villas it has now been superseded by training centers and residential Kram Salammbo. One can still admire some of the gardens surrounding the houses, the oldest built in a style Islamic Tunis and the big bourgeoisie in a style purely Italian as evidenced by the still Carmencita, a small town street Sakiet Sidi Youssef (formerly Rue Jules Ferry ). This town was developed mainly as a result of the opening of joining TGM Khereddine south and La Goulette, Carthage Salammbo and north.

The center of Salammbo houses, among other curiosities, the remains of Carthage Punic ports, the Tophet (or sacred area) of ancient Carthaginians and the buildings of the Institute and Museum of Oceanography
